Your basement flooring project - 5 things you need to consider

Basement Flooring

Basement Hardwood Flooring

You want your home renovation project to look and perform its best. And when it comes to renovating floors, hardwood is by far one of the most popular materials for practically any room. But if the room you’re renovating is in the basement, you’ll need to consider the following 5 things.

1. Choose the right kind of basement flooring

When it comes to upgrading your basement flooring, installing engineered hardwood is highly recommended. Installing solid hardwood below grade is a recipe for disaster. Basement have moisture levels that tend to vary with the seasons. This can wreak havoc on solid hardwood as it expands and contracts. Engineered flooring is great for areas that are subject to humidity fluctuations as it is more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood.

2. Engineered flooring can increase your home’s value

Although basements are typically the room in your house where everything you have no need for, or room for ends up, this room can actually add worth to your biggest investment. Wood floors are a great option for your home, but never forget that there is a big structural difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. See #1!

3. Maintain proper ventilation and moisture content

Cement is essentially dirt and water, so it’s is prone to attracting and retaining moisture. Because of its structural stability, when installing flooring over cement engineered hardwood is the perfect material. Also, our 3/4 inch thick, 11-ply planks are constructed to enable air to ventilate between flooring and the foundation which helps alleviate moisture problems. That means our engineered hardwood is less likely to gap or warp, and is well-equipped to resist mold and/or dust allergens.

4. We can manufacture any of our solid flooring as engineered

We actually manufacture our own solid flooring. This means we can also manufacture any of our solid flooring as engineered flooring. Engineered flooring is essentially a 3/16" wear layer mounted on 11-layer plywood for a total board thickness of 3/4". Our solid hardwoods include Cherry, Walnut, Birdseye Maple, Wide-Plank Livesawn Oak, and Quarter-Swan Oak, Hickory, Maple, Ash, Oak, Tigerwood, Jatoba, Cumaru, and Sucupira. Not surprisingly, that’s the same lines we have for our engineered flooring.
